Artist Statement

I strive to become an illustrator and all-around studio artist, which leads me to apply to an interdisciplinary studio art program. Besides illustration, my career goals are open to communications design, video game design, and animation storyboards. A BFA in Studio Art and a minor in graphic design would be fundamental for my goal to become an artist.
Since I was young, making art was always enjoyable. Whether scribbling random shapes or drawing family portraits for classroom activities, art has never been a boring hobby of mine. Since the age of four, my parents enrolled me in several extracurricular art programs, including public art sessions and private teachers’ art studios. Since living in Florida and North Carolina, seven different teachers have taught me. Through each teacher, I have developed skills using mediums such as acrylic, watercolor, pastels, graphite and ink, oil, and printmaking, as well as having an outlet to self-learn new mediums like gouache and sculpture. I started gathering a portfolio in my later years of high school when I became certain that a studio art degree was the best choice for my career. In that time, I also gathered a few awards, including gold, silver, and honors keys, in the Scholastic Art and Design contest and local school contests.
I joined clubs such as the National Art Honors Society and took classes such as Advanced Art, AP Art History, AP 2D and 3D Design, and AP Drawing. Each class has helped me create new techniques for future works and taught me the culture and basics of art, such as color technique and fundamentals of artwork features. Clubs such as honors society and Calligraphy Club allowed me to find more places where art is prevalent while actively participating in spreading my joy for art, whether through volunteering at art museums or painting school murals benches. Besides school, I volunteered in church and with teachers to teach other students and children basic arts and crafts, which taught me about art styles and education.
I want to study abroad, as I am also interested in learning about more cultures through art, especially about my own Chinese culture, as I have increased my love for it due to my time as the school Chinese Club president. I aspire to connect my art with more world views of art to improve myself and appeal to other cultures while engaging in active learning.
